Seek First: The Journey for Truth
But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you (Matthew 6:33).
The word that I want us to take a look at is “seek”. The most common definitions of “seek” means to look for something or the desire to attain something. However, I want to delve a bit more deeply.
In most academic and spiritual circles, ‘seeking’ is thought as a search for truth, wisdom, and expanded knowledge.
Both the academic and spiritual circles, however, seem to have different methods of searching, when they should actually be congruent (i.e. running together). What do I mean? The academic group usually believes that Knowledge is about facts and what can be immediately proven. In contrast, the church often shuns that academic world believing that it is evil and a part from God. Consequently, the God that we serve is a God of knowledge. He is OMNISCIENT, which means “all-knowing, all-wise, all-seeing...
As God’s children, who are created in His image, we, too, should be on a constant quest to know more, to be more, because being knowledgable actually makes us more like the father like Our Father. God and Knowledge are synonymous. Both God and knowledge are interchangeable, especially for us believers. How do I know that’s truth? Because in the word, there are constant reminders. I’ll give you two,
· 2 Timothy 2:15 (KJV) “Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.”
· Proverbs 4: 7-8 “Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding.8 Exalt her, and she shall promote thee: she shall bring thee to honour, when thou dost embrace her.”
Why is this so important? Because part of our Kingdom Mandate, as sons and daughters of God, is to get educated and knowledgeable.
God open up the door of knowledge for us so that we might take his truth out into the world. Our daily lives and conduct are not just about making a good life for ourselves. It is about us...
1) Taking the light into dark places: Our world is filled with rhetoric and doctrine that is contrary to the Word of God. I don’t say this to scare you, because unless you hide in a cave, you will come into contact with someone or something that will try to sway your beliefs.
2) contradicting religious thought patterns: religious people often believe that all books, except the bible are bad. This is fallacious and erroneous. Moreover, that type of backwards thinking is one of the many reasons why church folk have not taken dominion and why the world has created answers as opposed to coming to the people who should have the answers. I don’t say this because I know everything. In fact, I know very little. I say this because I know that God is…He is in the church, in the school, in anyplace that we allow Him to be. And because He is, I am . I am capable of being more than just a degree holder, a job keeper, a check to check liver….I CAN DO ALL THINGS THROUGH CHRIST WHO STRENGTHENS ME>
Thus, wherever god has placed us, it is because we are to counteract the forces of ignorance and darkness. But, you MUST KNOW be knowledgeable, especially of the word…
Psalms 119:11 says “thy Word have I hidden in my heart so that I might not sin against You.” David, the psalmist, is giving us a template to stay on the right path and away from destruction…KEEP THE WORD IN YOUR HEART. This means we can’t rely on momma's, grandma, and the churches prayers, but we MUST KNOW GOD FOR ourselves and we CANNOT KNOW GOD without KNOWING, STUDYING, and SEEKING HIS WORD. To not be knowledgeable and be a child of god is equivalent to saying that you’re in a relationship someone that you’ve never met. This is why so many ‘church people’ have become so easily swayed away from their faith. Trust me, I’ve seen untold numbers of people who claim to be “Christian”, but became confused and undecided due to a contradictory doctrine they heard.
You may say, “how is it possible that people can let go of a lifetime of teaching and Christian values?” The answer is simple… they went to church, they were taught religion…but they never KNEW relationship and grew in understanding for themselves.
Our relationship has to be more than emotional. WE HAVE TO KNOW THAT WE KNOW THAT WE KNOW WHAT WE KNOW.
